What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)? Attachment, Cycles and Healing
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is one of the best-evidenced couples therapy methods, grounded in attachment science. What is "the fight beneath the fight," how are negative cycles broken, and how does EFT work?

Why do two people who love each other keep hurting one another? Why does the same fight return in different disguises? Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) answers through humanity's deepest need: the need for secure attachment. This article explains what EFT is, the science behind it, and how it transforms a relationship.
What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?
EFT is a short-term, structured couples therapy developed in the 1980s by Dr. Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg, grounded in attachment theory. Its core premise: most conflicts are not really about the surface topic (money, chores, in-laws) but expressions of unmet attachment needs — to be seen, valued and feel safe. EFT is one of the most-researched and strongest-performing couples methods.
The Foundation: Attachment Theory in Adult Relationships
Building on Bowlby and Ainsworth, Sue Johnson showed that the need for secure attachment does not disappear in adulthood. When the bond feels threatened, adults — like infants — protest (anger, criticism, demand) or withdraw (silence, distance). Much "bad behavior" is a distorted cry of attachment panic.
"The Fight Beneath the Fight": Negative Cycles
The real problem is neither partner but the self-feeding cycle between them. One reaches for closeness through criticism; the other, feeling threatened, withdraws; withdrawal triggers the first's fear of abandonment, increasing criticism. EFT places this cycle on the table as a shared enemy.
Three Common Negative Cycles
Demand–Withdraw (most common), Criticize–Defend, and Withdraw–Withdraw (an emotional dead zone, the most advanced stage).
EFT's 3 Stages and 9 Steps
Stage 1 — De-escalation (steps 1-4): identify the cycle and underlying emotions.
Stage 2 — Restructuring attachment (steps 5-7): partners express deep fears and needs and can hear each other; includes the pivotal "softening" moment.
Stage 3 — Consolidation (steps 8-9): apply new patterns to old problems.
What Happens in an EFT Session?
The therapist seeks the vulnerable emotion beneath surface anger, helps express it safely, and helps the other hear it without defending — turning "attack-defend" into "need-closeness." The therapist acts less like a teacher and more like a choreographer of a new emotional dance.
Who Is EFT For?
Strong for emotional disconnection, repeated triggering, attachment wounds and rebuilding trust after infidelity. Not suitable alone amid active violence, ongoing secret infidelity or untreated serious addiction.
How Effective Is EFT?
Around 70-75% of couples move from "distressed" to "recovered," with gains largely maintained at follow-up. See Does Couples Therapy Really Work?
EFT vs the Gottman Method
EFT focuses on emotional attachment and underlying feelings; Gottman on behavioral patterns and communication skills. Experienced therapists combine them. See The Gottman Method.
EFT-Based Exercises at Home
Name the cycle ("we're in our cycle again"), look for the emotion beneath your anger, express needs with "I" language, and use your partner's vulnerable moments to move closer, not to be right.
FAQ
Is EFT only for "emotional" people? No — it works with everyone's attachment needs.
How long does it take? Usually 8-20 sessions.
Does it help after infidelity? Yes; it treats infidelity as an attachment wound.
